a peace movement . . .
So, I'm posting here to tell you about a world peace campaign I started a little while ago. I'll start out rather vague in the hopes of roping you in before you have a chance to think that this is a crackpot scheme.
What is this world peace campaign about? It is about reminding people that small actions can have a big impact. It is about encouraging people to put positive energy into their everyday activities. It is about questioning and challenging oppression. It is about promoting a positive attitude toward gender relations and body image. It is about promoting a healthy and wholistic attitude about bodies and sexuality.
Have I gotten your interest? ( Read more...Collapse )
There is an LJ community for the campaign called O YES! that everyone who is interested is invited to join. This community is a place to hear how the campaign is evolving, hear what others are saying and make your own posts related to the campaign. I encourage everyone to join!

We created Crayon People to act as a place for People of Color to get easy access to news ranging from political articles to current pop culture. Check out the new articles from your own relevant group (Arab, Asian, Black, Latino Desi), but feel free to discuss articles in the People of Color area as well as other groups. Posting comments and discussing the articles is the point to this whole website.
We want people from diverse backgrounds to converse and debate in a constructive environment. So please help us spread the word. We are a non-profit site, so basically that means we have a $0 promotion budget, unlike these other corporation giants. But please let us know what you think. Sign on post some comments and help make this good thing happen:).

a PROJECT for the March for Women's Lives
This is a crafty project so if your crafty feel free to help, if not perhaps you can help by spreading the word to someone who is-----
March for Women's Lives ~~ DC ~~ 4/25/04
For the march, I will be knitting millions of purple and gold (lemon yellow) wrist bands. These are the colors of the march and also the colors that were on the flags in the 'Iron Jawed Angels' HBO original movie on Alice Paul. I have people all over the country joining me for this project, some crocheting and some weaving.
How cool will it be to see a crowd of women and men raising their fists clad with a purple and gold feminist wrist bands? -YEAH!!
If you want to join me in my efforts, you can follow the pattern in the Stitch 'n Bitch book, just change the colors. or you can email me (airingoutthevulva at hotmail dot com). I can certainly use crafting help to make a million.
To get the bands to the march, you can either bring them with you, send them with a friend or email me about shipping.
I'm using CHEAP yarn for this project.
It is a great way to contribute to the cause if you cannot attend the March.
For more info on the March go to www.marchforwomen.org

how would people feel about me going to wackyjac and asking them if they would be willing to subsidize a come in peace postcard set? i could hand the photos over to them, someone in the collective could design them if the need/want/desire was there, and we'd figure out some kind of profit-splitting thing with wj where some of the money would go back to them and some to arise, srlp, voices in the wilderness, etc...
i just feel like we need to get moving on this and wackyjac is one company that i personally would feel great about the collective working with.
i know that that means that 100% of the profits wouldn't go to the orgs, but if they say yes, it does take care of us having to worry about fundraising to make the art. which is huge.
thoughts? hate it, love it, want me to do yesterday?
|Monday, October 6th, 2003|
Okay, we should really get on this. I think that getting the photos out there in some medium can happen and should happen. Not that I'm saying that I've been good at keeping up with stuff, because I haven't. But I'm gonna try really hard. And marginalutility
told me that there are people who want to give Come in Peace stuff to their teenage boys as holiday gifts, so really now. We should do something! :)
Item #1: The website. Has a domain been bought? mere
, are you still up for doing the design? I have the photos on my computer now, and I obviously have internet access, so if you need me to drop them in your server (have you a server at this point?) I totally can. If a domain hasn't been bought: boygrrrlwonder
, are you still up for fronting the money at this point and then we can all give you a couple bucks to pay you back? Or can you handle it on your own, Mia?
Item #2: ARISE. My phone wasn't making or taking off-campus calls a couple of weeks ago, so I emailed them about me doing workstudy and got no response, which doesn't totally surprise me as they are busy bees there. I tried calling them a few minutes ago at 413-348-8234, and my phone card told me the line wasn't available. Was I calling the main line, or someone's voicemail? beautifultoxin
said I should talk to Michaelann, so if anyone has her direct info, I'd be much obliged if you pass it on to me.
Item #3: Design. Of what? My thoughts were that once I had the hours/payment worked out with workstudy people here and Michaelann, I could begin work by researching printing costs for various mediums we've talked about (posters, post cards, playing cards, etc). However, if someone else has the time and wants to get on that fast -- be my guest! Anyway, once we figure out what we're making, who is still on board for doing design?
Item #4: Money. Where do we fundraise and who is in a place to do fundraising work? (I can do this once I have time blocked out in my workstudy schedule to do it.) Along the same lines: is hotwetprogressives.com just a pipedream or do we want to do it? Or is that just too much to take on right now? And can ARISE put any money into the project's printing costs?
Item #5: Meeting! What are good times for people to meet? Where should we meet? I think a meeting is a good idea! Yeah!
Okay, I think that's it for now.
Take care, you guys!

no meeting this week
The entire Gayest Mod Ever is sicky mcsick.
Let's try for *next* Friday the 19th?
And in the meantime let's think about other options a postcard set, playing cards (although that would mean more photos but maybe since we took so many photos we can just repeat models), a poster or posters, etc...
|Tuesday, September 9th, 2003|
Okay, I just saw Caty's post with Holly's name and the ARISE # and Melissa's post with Michaeanne's info. Cool, and thanks muchly you guys. Sorry for being lazy about checking comments.
Still, anybody have thoughts about the post-card idea?
And when do we want to meet next? I'd happily do this Friday, Sept. 12th, dinner-ish at the Gayest Mod Ever. People dig?
So it looks like I will almost certainly get workstudy money to do Come in Peace stuff. What I need is a supervisor to alert the Hampshire authorities to so it doesn't look like I am not doing anything.
Can someone update me on our status with ARISE? My understanding is that we have 501-c3 status as their project. I'd like to work 4-10 hours a week (depending upon how much other workstudy I am doing) on Come in Peace stuff (press releases, publicity, fundraising), preferably from my room. The person from ARISE would basically be signing off on me doing my work, and I'd probably call them at the beginning and end of my shift just to let them know what I'm working on and how long it's taking me.
Any suggestions as to who should supervise me? Can someone post the ARISE number so I can call and talk to said person?
Also: I've talked with a couple CiP folks about this idea, and I want to see what other folks think -- should we make something like a post-card set/book instead of a calendar? It'd be less time-sensitive that way, and we'd be able to sell them post-2004. Just a thought.

i just talked to ryn gluckman (from clpp at hampshire) and ze told me that there is a chance, since come in peace is now a 501-c3 as a project of arise, that i could get workstudy money to do come in peace. this would mean that i would be able to devote time to cip that i've already got in my schedule as job time. i couldn't put much of my workstudy money into cip, as my workstudy job is my income at school, but i think that if i could do this it would be really cool and it would mean that someone was guaranteed to be working on cip stuff at least ten hours a week.
what do you guys think? should i look into doing it?
1. do people have interest in having a meeting after everyone gets back to school and is settled? i was thinking the eve of september 5th or 6th at the gayest mod ever, permission of my modmates pending, of course.
2. caty, if i was to do cip as workstudy, could you put me into contact with whoever at arise would be my contact person/supervisor?

i just got this email -- does anyone know about this article in the voice she's talking about? cool!
i read a little article about y'all in the voice, and i'm interested to
learn more. i also might have some photography skills to offer. what
you're doing sounds great, so please let me know how i can get
caty, i've tried emailing you my mailing address so i can get to work on the 501-c3 forms, and it's bounced back both times. should i leave you my address in a locked entry on your journal? do you have any reliable email at this point?
mia and melissa, did you guys get my emails about doing the exchange of photos for the website between you guys? just let me know -- i'll help the process in any way i can.
be well, all!
busily yours ~

truthfully, i'd rather not buy the domain name. the ac adapter for my computer just broke and i, uh, have to pay rent next week. but randy offered to buy it. so unless there are any other takers, i would say go for it, randy.
anyhow. a cheap domain hosting company that's okay with nakedness... any ideas?
(oh, and gina--i emailed you my smith account login info.)

paying for the website
suggested that one of us buy the domain name comeinpeace.org (I guess it would make the most sense for Mia to do it since she is making the site for now?) and then we divide the price by the # of us and each of us pay back an equal share. That is fine by me -- does it work for all of you? (Esp you, Mia?)

hey folks ~
so, i am awaiting 501-c3 forms by way of the u.s. postal service. once they arrive, i can begin sending out funding requests to various organizations. robert + carol have given me some good leads on places we can go for funding.
i am, of course, going to post my draft letter here before i actually send anything out, so feedback can happen.
we'd talked before about not asking for funding till we had a website up/press packet available, so that potential funders/sellers would have an example of the product/organization. how are the website/packets coming along, if they are coming along at all? if they are not coming along, should i still send out the letters? i feel like the sooner we get on funding the better.
comments and updates appreciated.
be well, all!
